Austria is home to some of the most stunning lakes in Europe, and believe me — I’ve seen a lot of them. After traveling across countries and continents, I still find something uniquely peaceful and breathtaking about Austrian lakes, especially the ones nestled in alpine landscapes.

They have this quiet, natural beauty that always makes me stop and breathe deeper. Exploring some of the best lakes in Austria with my Brazilian partner has made these trips even more special (even if she tends to get more swollen from the summer heat than I do!).

We’ve had the pleasure of visiting a few beautiful lakes in Austria together, mostly by car from Graz, and here’s our top 3 — plus some other lakes near Graz we think are definitely worth sharing.

🚗 Worth the Drive: Scenic Lakes Beyond Graz

We’re an international couple — I’m Chris, born and raised in Austria, and after traveling to over 30 countries, I can honestly say there’s something special about coming home. Austrian lakes have a beauty that never gets old, and every trip — no matter how short or long — feels worth it.

Graz is perfectly located for that. From here, we can reach some of the most stunning lakes in the country within just a few hours by car. So if you’re looking for a weekend escape, a quiet swim, or a romantic nature break, these spots beyond the city are truly worth the drive.

🌊 My Top 3 Favorite Lakes

1. Weißensee (Carinthia)

🌴 First, the Weißensee lake in Carinthia — they say the water is cold, but I didn’t think so! It felt perfect for a summer swim in Austria, and the color? Unreal. It really does feel like the Caribbean of Austria.

Nestled at an altitude of 930 meters, Weißensee is renowned for its crystal-clear alpine water, making it one of Europe’s cleanest lakes for swimming. During summer, the water warms up to around 24°C, perfect for swimming, boating, and paddleboarding. The surrounding area offers scenic hiking trails with breathtaking views of the Gailtal and Carnic Alps, ideal for nature lovers and active travelers.

Swimming: Yes — excellent water quality, ideal for a refreshing dip in one of the most beautiful swimming lakes in Austria.

2. Wörthersee (Carinthia)

🏖️ Then there’s the Wörthersee lake in Carinthia, which is big, lively, and full of lakeside promenades, beach clubs, and stylish hotels. We did a day trip to Wörthersee and loved the mix of natural beauty and vibrant city energy. It’s the kind of Austrian lake you visit once… and want to return to every year.

Often referred to as the “Caribbean of the Alps“, Wörthersee boasts warm, turquoise waters reaching up to 28°C in summer. The lake is surrounded by charming towns like Klagenfurt and Velden, offering a perfect blend of relaxation, trendy beach cafés, and stunning lake views — ideal for couples or friends looking for a classic summer getaway in Austria.

Swimming: Yes — with several public swimming areas and private lake access points available throughout the shoreline.

3. Grüner See (Styria)

🌲 And of course, the Grüner See in Styria — famous for turning into an underwater forest in spring. This year, the lake almost dried out, but slowly, the water returned. Even without the full flood, the alpine scenery is breathtaking. That mountain view is something else and worth the visit, especially if you’re looking for unique nature spots in Austria.

Grüner See, or “Green Lake,” is one of the most unusual lakes in Austria, known for a natural phenomenon where snowmelt from the Hochschwab Mountains floods the surrounding forest, transforming it into a surreal underwater park.

However, in 2025, the lake remained unusually dry, due to a mild winter and reduced snowmelt. While the iconic flooded landscape didn’t appear this year, it’s still one of the most beautiful hiking and photography spots near Graz.

Swimming: No — swimming in Grüner See is no longer allowed to protect its fragile ecosystem.

🏞️ Lakes Near Graz Worth Exploring

Thalersee

Located just outside the city, Thalersee is one of the most accessible lakes near Graz — perfect for a relaxing half-day trip or spontaneous outing. You can walk the loop trail around the lake, rent a small boat, or enjoy coffee and homemade cake at the cozy lakeside café with mountain views. It’s a favorite for locals looking for nature spots close to Graz, especially families and couples.

Swimming: Not officially designated for bathing — and we don’t recommend it as a swimming lake near Graz, but it’s still a beautiful spot to enjoy the atmosphere.

Best for: Short walks, family outings, picnics, and quiet nature breaks just minutes from the city.

Hilmteich
Set in the peaceful Leechwald forest, Hilmteich is one of the most charming nature spots in Graz — more of a relaxing escape than a typical swimming destination. In the warmer months, you can rent paddle boats, enjoy a walk along the shaded paths, or simply relax on the grass with a picnic. The lake view in spring is especially lovely, with blossoming trees and calm reflections.

Swimming: No — Hilmteich is not a swimming lake, but it’s perfect for a peaceful afternoon close to the city.

Best for: Picnics in Graz, casual nature walks, and sunny days with a paddleboat ride.

Schwarzlsee
Just a short drive from the city, Schwarzlsee is one of the most popular swimming lakes near Graz — especially during the summer. With a paid beach area, wide lawns, water sports like paddleboarding and wakeboarding, and even summer concerts, it’s a go-to destination for anyone looking for active things to do near Graz. The lake is well-equipped with parking, cafés, and changing facilities.

Swimming: Yes — Schwarzlsee is a local favorite for swimming, especially on hot days. While the water isn’t as crystal-clear as it used to be, it remains a refreshing and fun option for locals and visitors alike.

Best for: Summer activities, social vibes, water sports, and full-day outings close to Graz.

Tiebersee
Tiebersee is one of the most peaceful lakes near Graz, located about an hour away by car, close to the village of Röthelstein. Surrounded by forested hills and natural beauty, it’s the perfect place for a quiet swim, sunbathing, or simply relaxing by the lake. There’s also a small lakeside café where you can grab a drink or snack after a dip. With its laid-back atmosphere and easy access, Tiebersee is our personal favorite among the lesser-known lakes near Graz.

Swimming: Yes — great water quality and a calm environment make it ideal for a summer swim near Graz.

Best for: Tranquil swims, nature getaways, and easy day trips from Graz.

Stubbenbergsee

Stubenbergsee is one of the best family-friendly lakes near Graz — even if it’s a bit farther out, the drive is absolutely worth it in summer. Located in East Styria, this large recreational lake is ideal for a full day outdoors. It offers spacious swimming areas, playgrounds, shady picnic spots, and several lakefront cafés. The calm, shallow waters make it especially safe for children, and there’s plenty of parking, making it super convenient for families coming by car.

Swimming: Yes — great for family swimming, with clean water and beach-style entry points.

Best for: Day trips from Graz, families with kids, swimming, and summer lake getaways in Styria.

Faaker See (Carinthia)
Known for its striking turquoise waters, Faaker See is one of the most beautiful lakes in Carinthia. It’s ideal for paddleboarding, kayaking, and hiking along scenic trails with mountain views.
Swimming: Yes — several public beach access areas make it perfect for a summer swim in southern Austria.

Altausseer See (Styria)
Set in the shadow of the Dachstein Mountains, Altausseer See is a postcard-perfect alpine lake in Styria, known for its clear, cold water and traditional wooden boats called Plätten.
Swimming: Yes — the water is cold, but crystal clear and refreshing.
Best for: Photography, tranquil hikes, and boat rides.

Grundlsee (Styria)
Often called the “Styrian Sea”, Grundlsee is the largest natural lake in Styria, ideal for sailing, scenic walks, and peaceful retreats. The views are stunning year-round, and it’s perfect for those who enjoy less crowded natural spots.
Swimming: Yes — multiple access points, including quiet bays and grassy areas for relaxing.

🚗 Tips for Visiting Austrian Lakes

Best Time to Visit:
The ideal season for visiting lakes in Austria is from late spring to early autumn (May–September), when temperatures are pleasant and most lakes are open for swimming.

Transportation:
Many lakes near Graz can be reached by bus or train, but having a car offers more flexibility — especially for remote lakes like Tiebersee or Stubenbergsee.

Amenities:
While larger lakes like Schwarzlsee and Wörthersee offer cafés, restrooms, and water sport rentals, smaller or hidden spots may have limited infrastructure. Always check in advance.

Nature Matters:
Please respect the environment — stick to marked trails, avoid loud music, and take your trash with you. Many natural lakes in Austria are protected areas, and helping preserve them makes everyone’s visit better.
