There’s something about strawberry season that makes summer feel official.

The days get longer, the fields turn green, and suddenly the idea of spending an afternoon outdoors with a basket full of fresh strawberries sounds like the perfect plan.

This year, however, the season started a little differently. Due to the unusually dry weather, several strawberry farms in Graz and the immediate surroundings have reported lower harvests than expected. When we checked earlier in the season, many self-picking fields near Graz were not yet open.

The situation may still change as the season progresses, and we’ll continue to monitor updates from local farms.

In the meantime, there are still plenty of places across Styria where you can enjoy this classic summer activity.

Before You Go

Since harvest conditions change quickly depending on weather and availability, we strongly recommend checking directly with the farms before visiting.

Not all fields may be open for self-picking at the same time, and opening dates can change throughout the season.

If you’re specifically looking for self-picking strawberry fields near Graz, keep an eye on our previous seasonal guide as many farms announce their opening dates there:

Why We Love This Tradition

One of the things we love most about living in Styria is how connected people are to seasonal produce and local farms.

Strawberry picking isn’t just about fruit. It’s about spending time outdoors, supporting local producers, discovering beautiful corners of the region, and creating small summer memories with friends and family.

And honestly? Strawberries always taste better when you picked them yourself.
